As teased yesterday – LEGO have just officially unveiled the LEGO Super Mario 64 Question Block on their socials and lego.com!

Announced as set number 71395 and consisting of 2064 pieces, the various “leaks” floating around the internet on this set code being a Super Mario Princess Castle were thankfully, completely and utterly wrong.
Created to celebrate 25 years since the launch of Super Mario 64 (yes, that really was released in 1996!), the set looks like a giant nostalia-fest for any LEGO and Nintendo fan.

It looks like we were about right in our investigations – a 24 x 24 brick yellow cube that unfolds to reveal four different Super Mario 64 worlds (amusingly referred to as “levels” by LEGO): Peach’s Castle, Bob-omb Battlefield, Cool, Cool Mountain and Lethal Lava Trouble.
Priced at £159.99 in the UK ($169.99 / €169.99), it pushes this set firmly into AFOL territory, or more accurately for BrickDads (and Mums) – AFOL-using-the-excuse-of-kids-to-buy-what-they-want territory.

As expected TLG have chosen to go with the microfig characters common to the LEGO Super Mario theme, rather than minifigs. It seems like that decision is already causing an uproar on social media! We can always hope, eh?
Here’s a statement from Pablo Gonzalez, one of the designers that worked on the set:
We know how much Super Mario fans have loved the LEGO Super Mario experience, and wanted to tap into even more elements of the traditional game play capturing the immersive play experience of Super Mario 64.
It’s difficult to imagine the Super Mario Universe without the classic game’s iconic levels full of discovery and secrets. With this amazing set, we’re building on the exciting play experience of LEGO Super Mario, both to bring a bit of nostalgia for those who played the Super Mario 64 video game, but also to introduce these wonderful levels to a whole new audience of Super Mario fans.
